Against the Fence ~ Five Minute Friday

Five Minute Friday

Today we’re linking up with Five Minute Friday. The rules are: Lisa Jo gives us a word to write on for 5 minutes…no major editing, no thinking too much…just writing and linking back to her site. So here we go…today’s word: Lonely.

GO!

Lonely ~ Conjures up images of a school yard and one standing against the fence, kicking stones and looking down;  wishing to be a part of the game or conversation…just not alone.

Now the school yard has changed.  It’s now the break room at the office, the conference room at work and even the foyer at church.

No longer do we have the fence to hold us up or rocks to kick around, but instead we whip out our phone, scroll…look busy, preoccupied…”We’re not lonely, just busy.” we say.

Where are you in the school yard?

  • Are you hitting the ball in your game of life? ~  I encourage you, look to that one against the fence.  Don’t just ask them for your ball back when it goes near but invite them in to play.
  • Are you in your circle of friends, catching up on the news of the day? ~  Open wide that circle and invite that one in.
  • Are you against the fence?

I have been there myself.  My comfort zone — the fence.

I’ve been there…walking into a room of unknowns.  Where friends are already made, acquaintances greeted and teammates picked.

I stand perplexed; busily searching the crowd for a familiar, welcoming face.

In the past, I have been the one to whip out that phone, scroll away and look busy.

But not today….not this time.  There are better places to be!  I step away from the fence, put my phone down, head into the crowd, and bravely say, “Hello!”

  1. I can so relate to this. It’s hard to step out of our comfort zones and pursue new relationships. I’ve been reminded a lot lately the the cliches of high school don’t disappear, they just change as we age. Some of them still have some of the same people in them. Good for you for deciding that you are going to take that important step.
