As much as I try, I just can’t do it

“Okay, Mom, roll your tongue like this….”

Concentrating hard and willing it as much as I can, I try to roll my tongue but it just won’t roll.

It’s the same with winking. I try and try but I can’t get just one eye to close while keeping the other one open.

It’s a family dinner pastime around this house. “Let’s watch Mom stick out her tongue and scrunch up her face!” Bwahahahaha

As much as I want to roll my tongue or wink just one eye, my genetic make-up makes it nearly impossible to do.

My own desires can be the same way. I can want to act one way but my innate nature… that hidden inner self… doesn’t always do right.  It battles against what I know to be right.

Paul writes about this in Romans 7:15 “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.”

We know it is right to practice love, be patient and show kindness but our wanting to do something and our actions are not always one and the same.

That’s why we need Jesus and His help on a daily basis.

What I want to do does not always play out in my every day.

As much as I try, I fall short.

And that’s why I’m thankful for grace and His strength in my weakness.

We can’t will ourselves right but when we yield our will to His righteousness we see right results.

You may have one up on me with your tongue rolling ability and that sweet wink of the eye but I’m guessing we are the same in not always practicing patience and showing love towards others.

And as much as we try on our own we don’t get it perfect each time.

But can I encourage you to keep trying!

We’re not perfect in our faith but we keep moving forward. We’re not alone but His strength is being made perfect in our weakness.

Forgetting what is behind and straining on toward what is ahead. We press on together toward Him and all that He has for us.

wink

  1. Rachel, exactly, we aren’t perfect but indeed God makes us perfect in our weakness. We all fall shor. Oh and by the way, I can’t roll my tongue either! Parked in the #11 spot this week!

  2. Rachel, another lovely and inspiring post! And I can’t roll my tongue either. Or do the drum roll thing with it. I could never be a Spaniard.
Great verse and words of wisdom for His strength is made perfect in our weakness!

  3. “We can’t will ourselves right but when we yield our will to His righteousness we see right results.” So good, Rachel! So grateful that as we press toward the prize, God guides the way and meets our every step. Now, I can wink and “taco tongue”, but I’ve got to tell you they aren’t skills that have gotten me very far – not ones to list on the resume – so I think you’re fine without them, friend. 😉

  4. ‘practicing patience’ for me might sound like a learning child squeaking a violin for a while, but with God’s help, He might train us well enough to get a proper pretty tune eventually!

  5. Loved this post, Rachel. And yes, I confess, I can curl my tongue, wink one eye AND whistle loud enough to quiet a large crowd. But, you’re so right. When it comes to living out those character aspects God wants us to live out consistently, I fall short. Often. Thank goodness His grace covers my shortcomings, and He refines me a little through each mistake, helping me reflect Him more accurately. I’m so glad His strength is being made perfect in my weakness.

    Great post today!

    • I knew there was something special about you…. you’re a tongue curler, a winker and a whistler! You’ve got it all! 🙂 Yay… I can’t whistle loud either so YOU HAVE GOT IT GOING ON! You go girl! 🙂
Yes, I’m so thankful for His grace and this chance for us to all grow together!
Thanks for jumping in and sharing! Happy Friday to you!

  6. Rachel,
thank you for your kind words on my blog. I too am deficient in the tongue. I also lack the skill of blowing bubbles with bubble gum. Although, I recently learned they are not related. My father cannot roll his tongue but can blow bubble gum bubbles.
This post was excellent. We are not “good enough”, but that “forgetting what is behind” and not dwelling on our failures…THAT is the freedom that He offers!
