When you are weary from this world

Five-Minute-Friday-4Kate and the gang are assembled again for this week’s Five Minute Friday. Kate gives a word prompt and we link up together and share. If you’d like to join us or read other Five Minute Friday’s, click here.

Our word prompt today: WEARY

GO

I have written recently how I have been weary, worn out and tired from the crazy of ministry, life and school all combined.

Christmas and the holidays are coming up and we can become weary just thinking about the planning, parties and preparations all of that takes. Part of it is the pressure we put on ourselves and the other part put on by others.

I’m coming into this season weary but I’m discovering something in all this.

I don’t have to do it all.

In this season of crazy, I am paring down my life. I am saying, “No” and I’m learning my limits.

Before this season and year of transition, I would just keep going.

I’m now stopping and thinking through what is before me.

I’m choosing differently on many things.

I’m coming into my own and it feels good to be known.

I heard someone recently say, “I didn’t really know myself until about my mid 40’s. I didn’t know that I didn’t know and then when I did know, it was good to be known.”

I’m okay with who I am. I’m getting okay with saying, “no” and I’m learning that when I’m weary it’s okay to sit back and let some things go. I don’t need to do it all and I’m not called to carry the whole load.

That’s my simple thought for the day.

Not really profound, not really grand, just knowing who we are, whose we are and where we belong is a good thing to know.

We can rest in Him and not in what we do.

Doing it all, wears on our soul. Letting Him be our all, breathes life into our lungs and carries us through the day.

Come to me all who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. ~ Matthew 11:28

Happy Friday everyone!  Have a great weekend!

  1. About 15 years ago, I was where you are now. What a difference saying “no” — to others *and* to myself — to the mom in me that wanted every holiday, every event to be the best ever. lol It wasn’t easy to do, but know what a difference it made, I applaud you for going against the grain, so to speak, and doing what’s right and healthy for you. I’ll definitely be back — I want to hear more of what you have to say. 🙂

    • Thank you, Patti! Yes, I often think, I wish I knew and felt this way about myself 10 years ago… but there is timing for everything and God doesn’t waste anything but uses it all to move us, grow us and help us become more grounded in Him. Glad to have you coming along on the journey with us as we learn together! Thanks for jumping in and sharing!

  2. THIS: “Not really profound, not really grand, just knowing who we are, whose we are and where we belong is a good thing to know.” Yes! I’m slowly learning it’s ok to say no too.

    • Yes, Tara, in a world a demand, I’m learning to prioritize and know my limits, my family’s limit and focusing on what God really has for me more than the demands put on by others is good and I’m learning I’m a much healthier person. Thanks for jumping in and sharing!

  3. Rachel, such a healthy perspective you share with us. We don’t have to carry the whole load, and I’m so glad we don’t! Love this: “We can rest in Him and not in what we do.” Easier said than done for me, sometimes, however. Praying the approaching season will be filled with rest and not restlessness! Bless you!

  4. Yay for you, Rachel! It’s good to know our limits and to say that two-letter word: N-O. When I got serious about writing, I had to start saying no. It was so hard, but now, I’m so glad I’ve learned my limits and how to say (and be okay with) that word.

Isn’t it a comfort knowing we don’t have to carry the entire load, we don’t have to do everything right now?

Your post confirms things within my own heart. 🙂
By the way: I like to say, “I found myself in my forties. I’m finally comfortable with who I am.”

Have a great weekend my friend.

    • Yes, I often think…”Wow, why couldn’t I have done this earlier in life?”… yet God works all things together and wastes nothing! I’m just glad He has brought me to this place! 🙂 Have a great weekend and thanks for jumping in and sharing!

  5. Great post, Rachel. I’m also gradually learning that it’s ok to say no. I love how you identify what’s really important- “knowing who we are, whose we are and where we belong.” If we’re sure of these things it definitely leads to rest.
