When the Unexpected Hits Hard and You Need Grace.

The snow slowly falls to the earth and covers the ground below. Silent and smooth, one by one the flakes fill in the crevices and space between each blade of grass and each crack in the pavement.

It’s not enough to cover it all. The ground is not yet in a thick blanket of insulation but the beginning is here.

It’s what I need today.

I need grace to cover the harshness of the morning.

My heart is heavy with sadness and this whole TRUST thing God is doing is sometimes exhausting when another event piles on top of the heap that has already happened this year.

We come up to catch our breath and out of nowhere it smacks real and close.

It’s the news that hits me straight in the heart. The sadness of the unexpected. News you didn’t imagine hearing as you pick up the phone. It rocks your world and causes tears to well up quickly.

This morning I need His grace to cover. I need His grace to fall into the crevices of my heart and slip into the cracks in my emotions.

And as I lean into Him, He is strong and faithful.

Slowly my heart yields and the lump in my throat fades. His grace covers and falls quiet and soft into the moments where I need Him.

The sadness is still there but His grace is there too. They meld together and the beauty of His grace in the moment brings peace.

I watch as the snow continues to fall and more and more is covered with the soft blanket of His grace.

  • When those unexpected moments come, lean into Him.
  • When emotions rise to the surface and explode from your being, breathe in grace.

Let His grace and love fall into those moments. Let the peace of His presence cover.

He is near. In fact, He is never far from us.

When we allow His grace to fall into those deep places, His Presence fills and His peace soaks in.

When the unexpected hits, His grace steps in.

What is unexpected to us, He already knew was coming.  Nothing takes Him by surprise and He knows the outcome before it even begins.  He knows the road ahead.  He does not leave us abandoned or forgotten, instead He leans in closer and walks us through.

We don’t get to bypass hurt or skip the heartache of life.

We journey.

We keep putting one foot in front of the other. Stepping… stepping… stepping… further into grace.

The heartache doesn’t go away, yet the pain lessens in His Presence.

Today as you journey, notice the grace of His Presence.  Let His grace fall into the crevices and cracks. Breathe in the peace He provides and know that in the unexpected of life, His grace is present through it all.

  1. Oh, I so needed this today! I felt as if our hearts were connected as I read your words. You could have been writing about my own story, right down to hearing sad news as I was watching snow fall. I just loved what you wrote when you said, “What is unexpected to us, He already knew was coming. Nothing takes Him by surprise and He knows the outcome before it even begins.” This was such a wonderful reminder for me. Thank you.

  3. Rachel, I’m so sorry for the hard you’ve walked through this year. We’ve had some of that too. I’m so thankful that the grace of God’s presence seeps into the cracks in my life. He fills them, gives His comfort and His strength. Your words encouraged, my friend. I hope your Thanksgiving is restful.
