What Chip and Joanna are teaching me

Five-Minute-Friday-4It’s Friday and we are linking up with Kate over at Five Minute Friday.  This is when we write for 5 minutes,  no over thinking, just write, link up and share together.  If you’d like to join us, click here.  Our word prompt today is:  EASY

For the last couple of months, I have been in the disciplined habit of waking up at 6 AM.  In fact, my alarm is set for 6:00 yet oftentimes my body wakes up at 5:56 and I shut off the alarm before it even has time to sound.

And then life happened, and Seattle happened… where I went to visit my daughter and the time change threw me off. I got sick and because rest was needed for this body, 6 AM was put aside for a while.

I’m now at the place where I need that early morning discipline again and it’s not easy to get back into that routine when no school bus or commute beckons you to wake with the rising sun.  It’s simply self-discipline that’s needed.

It’s also easier to wake up when you get to bed earlier. And with that, I learned an important lesson last night and it’s this…. “No Chip or Joanna before bed!!!!”  I watch them Fix-Up and my mind imagines all kinds of decorating ideas that fly through my head like an amazing internet connection.  I’m knocking down walls, putting in French doors and adding a custom-made island in every kitchen.

And as 1:12 AM flashes on the bedside clock I’m thinking my 6:00 AM wake-up call is not happening.

But it did…. and this time my brain didn’t hear the alarm and my poor hubby, who sleeps like a dead man heard the buzz, got out of bed and shut off my alarm.

What a good man!

He was sweet this morning and encouraged me to go back to sleep yet I’m telling you… if my alarm keeps waking him up that routine won’t keep happening with a smile.

It’s not easy… but it’s time to get that self-discipline kicked in again.

So what about you?  What’s that thing kickin’ you from behind?

  1. We’ve been watching Fixer Upper around here too. Usually I don’t get into remodel shows, but we’re all addicted to this one. Especially my daughter who is almost 9. It probably doesn’t help that we’re getting ready to move … but we won’t be knocking out any walls at this point. 🙂 Happy Friday, Rachel!

  2. The need for vacation is kicking me in the behind! I’m trying to go to bed earlier, too, so that I can get up at 4 and write before work…but the kids are wearing me out with their spring fever and grumpy attitudes (there are staff changes in the works for next year, and our kids HATE change with a passion).

    • Ugh… I hear ya there! The end of the year is tough battling through. The sunshine calls you out and it’s hard to stay focused! Yes, you’ve had quite the year this year! Hope it goes speedily for you to your vacation time. That will be a good thing for you! 🙂

  3. Rachel, your story made me smile. Exercise has been “that thing” I have trouble establishing the discipline to do. I was beginning to get a walking routine going when I tore my ACL in January. Once I’m able to walk for exercise again, I’m going to be more diligent with it. I need to. I’m realizing this aging thing takes a toll on healing as well. I want to be as healthy as I can be as I near 50 and beyond. 🙂

You can get back in the habit of getting up early. 🙂 As you mentioned removing those things that keep us awake at night helps. 🙂

    • Yes, I completely agree with you. I want to age well and as the years go by my time table seems to be getting smaller and smaller so discipline has to take place if I’m going to accomplish what I’d like in life. Yes, I’m working on the discipline again… because just because we fail doesn’t me we don’t try again! Thanks for jumping in!

  4. I have been getting up at 5:00 a.m. most days to exercise and am learning fast that I can’t stay up past 9:00 p.m. A hard habit to establish when my sleep routine has been chaotic, to say the least, for the last several years!

    • Good for you! That takes so much discipline. I do love getting up early when the house is quiet. What is difficult is when the rest of my family likes to stay up late and ask “mom, do you want to watch this movie with us?” It’s a struggle but they are working with me because they know I can’t do both… stay up late and get up early! Thanks for jumping in!

  5. Bella is putting a daily boot in my bum, around 0500.

She is a Toto-look-alike, whom we found with a broken back, drowning in a flooded ditch, in 2013, just after our bank account had been drained by pirates.

The vet to whom we took her said he would put her down for free, but that given a bit of love, she might yet live.

She is learning to walk again. He spine was crushed, but her spinal cord and spirit are quite intact.

    Still…every morning, at 0500…

“Dad? DAD! I have to go out. Now. Or else I will wake the entire household.”

She fears nothing; we have multitudinous Pit Bulls, and an enormous Rottweiler, who cringe at her imperious commands

    Bella rules.

    • Yep… that sounds like a boot in the bum! Our Della is pretty good and waits for us to come get her but our dog, Duchess, before her was like an alarm clock… precisely at her time she would bark and want out… and with 3 small kids in the house at that time sleep was precious so we did what we could to keep the house quiet while they were sleeping so yes, Duchess kind of ruled the morning as well! 🙂 Thanks for jumping in! Have a great week!
