Summer Knitting Break ~ Market Bag

Now that it’s summer, I have more time for my knitting habit.

I have been working on a huge block afghan, which is taking some time. I needed a break from it… something fast and easy to do without a lot of expense; so I headed over to Ravelry to check out some free patterns.

After scrolling for a while, my eyes fell on this market bag from Quickly Unravel. (Find the pattern here.)

I’m such a sucker for any kind of bag…it’s a weakness for me. (Don’t look in my closet!)

But this bag fit all the criteria for my little excursion. It was easy, fast and cheap!  I had small amounts of Sugar & Cream yarn remnants leftover from previous knitting projects so I just pulled them together to make this.

Knitting time ~ this took me a little over 4 hours.  I’m not a fast knitter~ plus I was taking in some movie time while knitting, so you know how that can go!  In total, I maybe used one skein of yarn.  It is hard to say because I basically just knit until I ran out of one color and then moved on to the next.

I love the colors and my girls kept saying, “Mom, I might just have to steal that bag!”

At first, I didn’t think it was going to hold much but it actually held quite a bit. I dug in my fridge and decided to fill it up and see what I could fit into it. My little experiment added up to:

full market bag3

  • 6 limes
  • 3 lemons
  • 5 bell peppers
  • 1 avocado
  • 6 cobs of corn

I was quite impressed and plus ~it’s so cute!

Added bonus: It’s flexible and collapses into such a small space, I can just throw it in my purse or next to my front seat in the van and I’m ready for whatever little purchase comes my way!

  1. My question about this project is about starting in the round. So you have this 15 stitch wide and 32 row long piece of straight garter stitch. For the next step you are to pick up 15 stitches on the other three sides then knit the original 15 stitches. I’m having some difficulty with this. Could you not cast off and pick up the stitches from there?

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

    • I think you could cast off but you already have those 15 stitches on your needle so casting off and trying to pick up the stitches again would make more work for you.

Are you having difficulty finding the stitches on the edges to pick up?

      • Yes, I have never picked up stitches before. I am a self taught knitter and wanting and willing to learn. Thanks

      • Great, so am I…a self-learner!

So what you’re going to do is use your circular needles or double pointed needles because you’re going to start knitting in the round….you’re starting on the sides of the bag all the way around so you need to pick up 15 stitches from each side of the bottom which you just knit so you’re basically going around the bag picking up stitches and the part that is already on the needle will be one side.

Here is a great video on how to pick up stitches.

That site is great for searching out how to do things. It will show you how to pick up stitches whether you knit continental or English….they have a video explaining that as well.

You’ll want to evenly pick up your stitches on the long side. If I remember correctly it is one stitch per two rows I think but I can’t remember for sure just make sure it’s evenly spread across.

Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions! 🙂 .
